The Phoenix is pleased to welcome Mongolian singers Michael Ormiston and Candida Valentino to the cinema on Sunday 8th June. They will sing prior to the early evening screening of Mongol, the Oscar nominated film charting the life of Ghengis Khan. Michael and Candida will play traditional and original music inspired by the Altai & Himalaya mountains, reflecting their passion for the sounds of Mongolia, Tibet and beyond. Listen to their rare combination of Mongolian Khöömii overtone singing, undertone singing, with Mongolian Horse head fiddle, Shaman drum, Dombra, Jews Harps, Bouzouki and more.

Michael Ormiston is Britain’s foremost Mongolian Khöömii (overtone) singer,

a remarkable style where one person sings two notes at the same time!

Candida Valentino is probably the only European woman to sing the Khargiraa undertone style of throat singing.

Award-winning Russian filmmaker Sergei Bodrov illuminates the life and legend of Genghis Khan in this stunning, Oscar nominated historical epic. Based on leading scholarly accounts, Mongol delves into the dramatic and harrowing early years of the ruler who was born as Temujin in 1162. As it follows Temujin from his perilous childhood to the battle that sealed his destiny, the film paints a multidimensional portrait of the future conqueror, revealing him not as the evil brute of stereotype, but as an inspiring, fearless and visionary leader. Mongol shows us the making of an extraordinary man, and the foundation on which so much of his greatness rested: his relationship with his wife, Borte, his lifelong love and most trusted advisor.

2hrs, Mongolia/Russia 2007. Directed by Sergei Bodrov.  English subtitles
